I am 5’3”. I am not very tall obviously. So, let me tell you a little bit about my size restrictions.
We have an Andon light system at work. All the Engineers (Manufacturing, design and quality), supply chain, and supervisors are required to attend the issue. Can you believe that from all those people, I am the only female? So, everyone gets there, and they start huddling up around the parts. By the time I get there, there are a bunch of people way taller than me that won’t let me see. I used to always try to find a way into the huddle to see what’s going on. However, we recently realized that if I am right in front, they can still see over me. So now when I get there, I basically just state to move out of my way to let me get in since I don’t obstruct visibility. Its funny but it works. I also get a first-row look. 😊
Another thing that I have been struggling with recently is finding a small pair of high-heat gloves. I have been recently experimenting with annealing and heat-treating aluminum. So, the temperatures that I deal with are between 350F, 775F or even 980F. Sadly, the only gloves that are available that resist that heat are about 3 times the size of my hand. Now imagine, my tiny hand inside a massive glove, trying to pick up a piece that is about 2×4 inches. I basically look like a T-Rex trying to lift something from the floor. As much as I try, the parts keep slipping from my hands.
Anyways, so I have been in the search for a new pair that fits me better. I have actually been sharing this journey on my Instagram (@latina_enigneer). However, I have been having no luck! All protective equipment is targeted towards men. (Don’t make me bring up my steel toe boot search!) So, all gloves I have found so far are mostly one size fits all (which in other words means: We took a man’s average sized hand and added 2 inches from each side and that’s standard glove size…). The closest I could get was sizes starting at medium. Or the ones that are small do not reach the high temperatures that I need.
This reminded me of a personal protective equipment brand focuses on creating these items for women: @aptoppe (Not sponsored. I just think they are the coolest). They even offer them in maternity options!! One of my favorite posts from them is about comparing how clothes are made based on the different measurements depending if it’s a man or a woman. For example, a man’s T-shirt (or even a PPE jacket) is made based on neck, chest, and waist measurements. While a woman’s is based on bust, waist, and hips. They bring up a very important point: Women are not smaller than men; They just need items that fit to our shapes. Yes!!!
Lately, I have been seeing a lot of different brands that are emerging to solve these problems. There are now multiple safety shoe brands specifically for women. This was just a high topic when I was in school between female engineers. Multiple times at least one of us would bring up the idea of just starting our own brand. There are obviously still gaps, but we are working toward closing them!

Así que ahora, cuando llego allí, básicamente les digo a todos que me dejen pasar al frente ya que no obstruyo la visibilidad. Es un poco gracioso, pero funciona. Además también obtengo vista de primera fila.
Otra cosa con la que he estado luchando recientemente es en encontrar un pequeño par de guantes que resistan alta temperatura. Recientemente he estado experimentando con tratamiento térmico de aluminio. Entonces, las temperaturas con las que trato son entre 350F, 775F o incluso 980F. Lamentablemente, los únicos guantes disponibles que resisten ese calor son aproximadamente 3 veces el tamaño de mi mano. Ahora imagina, mi pequeña mano dentro de un enorme guante, tratando de levantar una pieza de aproximadamente 2×4 pulgadas. Básicamente me veo como un T-Rex tratando de levantar algo del piso. Por mucho que lo intente, las partes se me resbalan de las manos.
Así que he estado buscando un nuevo par que me quede mejor. De hecho, he estado compartiendo esta pequeña historia en mi Instagram (@latina_enigneer). ¡Sin embargo, no he tenido suerte! Todo el equipo de protección está dirigido para los hombres. Entonces, todos los guantes que he encontrado hasta ahora son, en su mayoría, de talla única (lo que en otras palabras significa: Tomamos la mano de un hombre de tamaño promedio y agregamos 2 pulgadas de cada uno lado y eso es tamaño de in guante estándar …). Lo más cercano que pude obtener fueron los tamaños comenzando en medio. O los que son pequeños no alcanzan las altas temperaturas que necesito.
Esto me recordó a una marca de equipos de protección personal que se enfoca en crear estos artículos para mujeres: @aptoppe (No patrocinado. Simplemente creo que son los mejores). ¡Incluso los ofrecen en opciones de maternidad! Una de mis publicaciones favoritas de ellos es sobre cómo comparar la confección de la ropa según las diferentes medidas, dependiendo de si es un hombre o una mujer. Por ejemplo, la camiseta de un hombre (o incluso una chaqueta de PPE) está hecha en base a medidas de cuello, pecho y cintura. Mientras que el de una mujer se basa en el busto, cintura y caderas. Traen un punto muy importante: las mujeres no son más pequeñas que los hombres; Solo necesitan artículos que se ajusten a nuestras formas. Exacto!!
Últimamente, he estado viendo muchas marcas diferentes que están surgiendo para resolver estos problemas. Ahora hay múltiples marcas de calzado de seguridad específicamente para mujeres. Este era un tema super importante cuando estaba en la escuela. Varias veces, al menos una de nosotras plantearía la idea de comenzar nuestra propia marca. Obviamente todavía hay brechas, ¡pero estamos trabajando para cerrarlas!
