I know what you are thinking… Engineering Couture??? Let me explain.

One of the most important things for me is dressing well. If I am dressed well, I feel confident. I am also a college graduate with a full-time engineering job, so dressing appropriate for work is a must. Business casual is the dress code for work, and honestly also my dress code for life. I like to look presentable and I like to show a responsible appearance.

I am writing this post because being an engineering should not compromise expressing yourself. Everybody knows the “funny” images that go around the internet showing female engineers being manly. I got to say, there is nothing that makes me angrier than that. I am very intelligent, and I am also very girly. Being an engineer does not define your style. And I make sure to make my point by always dressing presentable and somewhat fashionable (while being safe!) because that is just how I am.

Men’s work wear is so basic: Dress pants, dress shoes, dress shirt. That’s it! They all look the same, just different colors. You know how many types of sleeves woman’s shirts have? do you know how many different types of cuts pants have? Let alone, do you know how many different shoes there are for women? Now guess how many are appropriate for my job. So far, I still have to pack an extra pair of shoes everyday just to be safe.

In my case, work attire is a very tricky situation. I am not always sitting down in my desk doing engineering things. Sometimes I am up and about around 50% of the time doing all sorts of things. I never know what that day is going to bring. I might be sitting all day wearing flat shoes, or I might be standing all day wearing my 2″ heels. I just never know.

I, of course want to be comfortable, but there aren’t many shoe options out there for us. I must be wearing closed toe shoes at all times. So, my solution has been 1″ to 2″ heeled booties. I have 3 pairs and that is literally all I wear to work. Then, every now and then, I have to be standing all day and I regret my decisions, but its either that or heavy bulky work boots that I could never wear with my regular slacks or a skirt or any other business attire. So, what am I supposed to do? I feel like there is no one I can ask!

Imagine in earlier decades, when women couldn’t wear pants. They always had to wear skirts and heels…. I could never be doing what I do! That world, just by deciding what woman should wear was limiting them to what they could do!!

There is such a taboo at work on how I am supposed to look. After all, I am the only female engineer, and one of the few younger females (I am talking 20+ year differences) at our facility. So, I don’t really have someone to look up as far as work outfits guidance.

So, on the daily, I tend to go for a pair of skinny dress pants (I currently own about 5 pairs of the same pant!), and a blouse or sweater. I really like wearing light colors for my tops. If you were to run into me during any workday, I would most likely be wearing black pants and a white or cream blouse. I am used to taking care of the white, but honestly, I am very clumsy.

However, there is always someone who warns me about my outfit (I am not talking about it being inappropriate or unsafe), but about it being “too nice to wear”, or “what if it gets stained”, etc. I swear everybody else cares more about if something happens to my white shirt than myself. To be honest, I do care. But I care more about dressing nice and work appropriate. I am not going to wear just a t-shirt because there is a 10% chance that it might get grease on it. I understand, but also understand me. My outfits look presentable, they are nice, they are comfortable, they are appropriate for my job and they make me feel good.

Some other days I wear skirts, some days I wear dresses (note very often). My favorite outfit by far, its a pink fluffy jacket along with my regular black slacks and white shirt. It is the best. Just picture it: someone says the engineer is coming. People immediately picture a man. Then I walk in. I am a female, I am very young, I am tiny, I am a Latina and…. I am wearing the girliest thing: a fluffy pink jacket! I think it is hilarious.

Anyways, so I recently got a scrub jacket to wear at work. Let me emphasize, I got a long sleeve, flattering scrub jacket. And it has been the best decision that I have ever made. I can get to wear whatever I want for the office, but the moment I walk into the manufacturing floor, I put on the jacket and I am ready, I am protected, and most importantly of all: I have pockets. (ok, I am having too much fun here)

I am obviously too young to say that this is how I will be the rest of my career. But I like the liberty I get to have where I live and where I work. Where I can wear pretty much everything and be myself. I also want to emphasize the importance of being yourself. The importance of not listening to anyone (unless it’s completely inappropriate). But just be yourself, make it work with your job. There might always have to be some compromise, but you don’t have to give up on one of the biggest forms of expression. I am happy with my work clothes. I will literally wear the same stuff on the weekends because it’s what makes me feel good. I am told every now and then that I dress up too nice (in a negative way). Let me tell you, just because somebody wouldn’t wear what you do, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t either. Engineering has not changed or influenced the way I express myself thought my clothes, and I am here to tell you that it doesn’t have to change yours either. Girl, if you can wear heels to work everyday and that makes you feel empowered… Do it!

Ya sé lo que están pensando… ¿Alta costura para ingenieras? ¿Qué es esto?

Una de las cosas más importantes para mi es vestirme bien. Si me visto bien, me siento segura y determinada. Además, ahora al haberme graduado y ser una ingeniera de tiempo complete, siento que es mi deber vestirme apropiadamente para mi trabajo. La etiqueta de vestimenta en mi trabajo es semiprofesional, pero la verdad es que ese es mi tipo de vestimenta para mi vida diaria dentro y fuera del trabajo. Me gusta vestir presentable y mostar una apariencia responsible

Estoy escribiendo esta publicación porque ser ingeniera no debe comprometer tu expresión. Todo el mundo conoce las imágenes “divertidas” que circulan por Internet que muestran que las ingenieras son varoniles. Debo decir que no hay nada que me enoje más que eso. Soy muy inteligente y también soy muy femenina. Ser ingeniera no define tu estilo. Y me aseguro de expresar mi punto de vista siempre. Me gusta vestir presentable y de alguna manera a la moda (¡mientras me mantengo protegida!) Porque así es como soy.

La ropa de trabajo para hombres es tan básica: pantalones de vestir, zapatos de vestir, camisas de vestir. ¡Y ya! Todos se ven iguales, solo diferentes colores. ¿Sabes cuántos tipos de mangas tienen las blusas de mujer? ¿Saben cuántos tipos diferentes de cortes tienen los pantalones?  ¿saben cuántos zapatos diferentes hay para mujeres? Ahora adivina cuántos son apropiados para mi trabajo. Hasta ahora, solo eh encontrado uno. Diario tengo que empacar un par de zapatos extra todos los días solo por si me canso.

En mi caso, la vestimenta de trabajo es una situación muy complicada. No siempre estoy sentada en mi escritorio haciendo cosas de ingeniería. A veces estoy andando el 50% del tiempo haciendo todo tipo de cosas. Nunca sé qué traerá ese día. Podría estar sentada todo el día usando zapatos planos, o podría estar parada usando mis tacones de 2 pulgadas. Simplemente nunca lo sé.

Yo, por supuesto que quiero estar cómoda, pero no hay muchas opciones de zapatos para mí. Debo llevar zapatos cerrados en todo momento. Como resultado, mi solución ha sido botines de tacón de 1 a 2 pulgadas. Tengo 3 pares, es literalmente todo lo que me pongo para trabajar. Entonces, de vez en cuando, tengo que estar de pie todo el día y me arrepiento de mis decisiones, pero es eso o pesadas y voluminosas botas de trabajo que nunca podría usar con mis pantalones de trabajo o una falda o cualquier otro atuendo profesional. Entonces, ¿qué se supone que debo hacer? ¡Siento que no hay nadie a quien pueda preguntar!

Imagínese en décadas anteriores, cuando las mujeres no podían usar pantalones. Siempre tenían que usar faldas y tacones … ¡Nunca podría estar haciendo lo que hago! ¡Ese mundo, solo al decidir qué mujer debería usar, las estaba limitando a lo que podían hacer!

Hay un tabú en el trabajo sobre cómo se supone que debo verme. Después de todo, soy la única ingeniera y una de las pocas mujeres más jóvenes (estoy hablando de diferencias de más de 20 años) en nuestras instalaciones. Por lo tanto, realmente no tengo a nadie en quien basarme en cuanto a cómo vestirme.

A diario, tiendo a optar por un par de pantalones de vestir ajustados (¡actualmente tengo alrededor de 5 pares del mismo pantalón!) Y una blusa o suéter color claro. Si te encontraras conmigo durante cualquier día de trabajo, probablemente usaría pantalones negros y una blusa blanca o crema. Estoy acostumbrado a cuidar a los blancos, pero, sinceramente, soy muy torpe.

Sin embargo, siempre hay alguien que me advierte sobre mi atuendo (no estoy hablando de que sea inapropiado o inseguro), sino de que es “demasiado bonito para usar” o “se puede manchar”, etc. Enserio a todos les importa más que a mi si me mancho. Para ser honesta, si me importa. Pero me importa más vestirme bien y vestir adecuadamente. No voy una simple camiseta solo por el hecho de haber un 10% de posibilidades de que pueda engrasarla. Entiendo, pero también entiéndanme a mí. Mis atuendos se ven presentables, son agradables, son cómodos, son apropiados para mi trabajo y me hacen sentir bien.

Algunos otros días llevo faldas, algunos días llevo vestidos (no muy a menudo). Mi atuendo favorito es una chaqueta rosa y esponjosa. Es la mejor. Imagínelo: alguien dice que viene el ingeniero. La gente inmediatamente se imagina a un hombre. Luego entro. Soy una mujer, soy muy joven, soy pequeña, soy latina y … estoy usando algo super femenino: ¡una chaqueta rosa esponjosa! Creo que es muy gracioso.

Sin embargo, recientemente obtuve una chaqueta protectora para usar en el trabajo. Permítanme enfatizar, tengo una chaqueta de manga larga y favorecedora. Y ha sido la mejor decisión que he tomado. Puedo ponerme lo que quiera para la oficina, pero en el momento en que entro al piso de fabricación, me pongo la chaqueta y estoy lista, estoy protegida, y lo más importante de todo: tengo bolsillos. (ok, me estoy divirtiendo demasiado aquí)

Obviamente soy demasiado joven para decir que así será el resto de mi carrera. Pero me gusta la libertad que tengo de tener donde vivo y donde trabajo. Donde puedo usar casi todo y ser yo misma. También quiero enfatizar la importancia de ser uno mismo. La importancia de no escuchar a nadie (a menos que sea completamente inapropiado). Pero solo sé tú mismo, haz que funcione con tu trabajo. Es posible que siempre deba haber algún sacrificio, pero no tienes que renunciar a una de las formas de expresión más importantes. Estoy feliz con mi ropa de trabajo. Literalmente uso las mismas cosas los fines de semana, porque es lo que me hace sentir bien. De vez en cuando me dicen que me visto muy formal (de manera negativa). Déjame decirte que el hecho de que alguien no use lo que tú quieras usar, no significa que tú tampoco debas hacerlo. La ingeniería no ha cambiado, ni ha influido en la forma en que me expreso o lo que decido vestir. Y hoy estoy aquí para decirles que tampoco tiene que cambiar la suya. Chica, si puedes usar tacones para trabajar todos los días y eso te hace sentir empoderada … ¡Hazlo!
